During your first visit, a comprehensive case history will be taken that will deal not only with your problem on the day, but will also explore relevant aspects of your general health and past medical history. In this way the Osteopath is able to build up a picture of you as an individual, and tailor treatment specifically to you.

Your first visit will also include a physical examination where you will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing and perform a series of simple movements so please wear appropriate underwear. Osteopathy is a hands-on therapy, and the Osteopath will use a highly developed sense of touch, called palpation, to identify any points of strain or dysfunction throughout the body.

Putting all this information together enables the Osteopath to formulate a diagnosis and together with you the patient, discuss an effective treatment plan. If appropriate, osteopaths may refer patients back to their GP for further medical tests.
